Wild West Update

Get on your +1 Cowboy Boots. The Weird and Western has arrived.

Because the Wild West Update completes another set of 12 classes between our themed updates, it's the last themed update I have planned out fully, though that is not to say that it will be the last one you see from us. If you somehow missed our other updates, the Magitech Update is for all things futuristic and high-tech and the Lovecraft Update is for all things alien and terrifying. In addition, there's Class Pack 1 and Class Pack 2, for even more goodness.

Shameless self-promoting aside, I should ask a few open questions of our readers:

What type of themes would you like to see done in the future? How much interest is there in something like, say, another Magitech Update?
How comfortable are you and your DM in including homebrew content at your gaming table? Is it easier to include something smaller, like a homebrew subclass, or is it easier to go all out, with entire homebrew classes and races?
How many races should we put together for a race pack? Which races or monsters would you like to play as?

As always, feel free to email us at middlefingerofvecna@gmail.com or leave us a comment below.

  1. Your content (as a DM) seems balanced and reasonable, thus I offer it to my players if they want to do something very specific. I really do appreciate your content, some of my buddies that came from 3.5 love getting to play some of their favorite classes brought back.
Full homebrew classes I really won't allow, unless it is something extremly specific for my campaign setting. Races I tend to be more flexible with, and races like Kobolds and Goblins I love to see my players go for.

Hoping to see a general selection of races (6-8 would be plenty) including Kobold and Thri-Kreen. I think there could be potential in say a Goblinoid race pack, maybe include some goblin weapon variants or variant racial feats that Goblinoids (Such has Hobos, Bugbears, and Goblins) can take. Kenku always struck me as an interesting race as well.

Oh and I would absolutely adore more Magitech goodness.

  2. Classes-As a DM, I only allow home brew subclasses. From both sides, Barb, Bard, Druid, Sorc and Warl subclasses are the best. As a player, I want unique stuff like teleportation and demon summoning.
Races-Bugbears, Hobgoblins, Goblins, Orcs... all the greenskin races. In addition, I'm interested in a more complex race, with subclasses that choose between specific stuff, like wings and fangs and darkvision. In addition, elf, dwarf, Halfling, gnome etc could all use subclasses.
    Backgrounds-Yes. I want these.

    1. Greenskins seem to have a consensus. I'll see if the wonderful Ralcos from GitP has anything he want to contribute, and get to work on some of these myself.

  3. Everyone in my group loves the products you guys release, so when we shuffle dms your stuff is usually allowed if it is fitting with the setting (no cowboys in high fantacy, no magitech in a world where crossbows are the epitome of technological advances, that kinda thing) I would love to see a few monster races to play as, like goblinoids, full on orcs, Duergar, maybe even Pixie or imp... also, as for classes i would love to see something of a dark option for bards, like a "school of eternal sorrow" or something. where instead of on buffing allies, it focuses on debuffing foes. Instead of bringing joy and encouraging allies, they bring their selevted foes to the depths of sorrow and depression and making life hard for their enemies. Raising the dead and stuff also kina fits.

  4. How do you guys feel about homebrewing more spells?

    1. Spells would probably be one of the easiest things to homebrew, especially if you're porting ones from previous editions.

    2. Spells are something I've considered, but I was never sure if they were something that people would actually use, so I've been quite hesitant to write anything.

    3. I've been trying to convert some swordsage maneuvers. Should be pretty similar. The thing is, some spells in previous editions either rely on a mechanic that doesn't exist anymore or do something that isn't permitted anymore regarding the action economy and rules in general. Those can never really be converted and still feel the same.

As far as homebrewing new spells, it'll be difficult doing something that isn't already done by another existing spell, but I think we could manage, provided we have the time between all these other projects.

  5. I really like your content and have adapted some of it for my campaign. I especially like the themed classes/races. Have you considered Romantic Era (Musketeers, Corrupt Clergy, Occult Scientists, New World Explorers, Court spies, and Incognito Nobility) or some sort of Victor Hugo/Charles Dickens mashup (Gypsies and Mutants, Escaped Prisoners seeking reform, Relentless Lawmen, Child crime gangs and Haunted Oligarchs)

    1. Romantic era is a great idea!

    2. My current game is an "Enlightened Age" era game. Exploration, Scientific Curiosity, Court Intrigue, (literal) Cloak and Dagger spying, Empires shifting, flintlocks, mechanical devices, and noble savages.

  6. Magitech was my favorite of the three updates.. A magitech subclass for each class would be awesome!

As a DM, I feel your content is fairly balanced. I make it available along with the PHB when my crew makes characters, and so far they have really enjoyed your updates!

As for the race pack, I feel goblins and kobolds would be cool to have, but I would be MOST interested in a conversion of Warforged to 5e.

    1. Wizards actually already converted Warforged to 5e with Unearthed Arcana. Look them up, most Eberron races have been converted in a mostly finished state. Just glance over them for balance issues (as most probably do with Vecna) and then implement them. The Warforged were particularly well done imo.

    2. The warforged aren't really in their final state, from what I've heard, but since wizards is working hard on getting a final version, I'll wait and see what they put out before working on anything of my own. The warforged are my favorite race, so I'm pretty excited for their eventual release

  7. I'd be interested in more Updates for the themes that have been already done, for any of them to be honest. As for more themes, maybe something akin to scientific road (either with a hint of sci-fi, or fantasy "sciences" like alchemy), or Steampunk (unless it would be too easy to just reskin stuff that's already there).

Being the DM, I'm just testing it this far. I haven't told most of my players to not scare them, but I tried to make it work. As for the inclusion, the races and subclasses are ideal for me. Whole class would be more complicated, although I could make it work (but honestly, I don't have any plans to test the Hulk). As for another DnD game where I'm the player, well... that one's a strict official game of Adventurer's League, so I guess that he wouldn't allow them.

I'd say that race pack could be made up of 8-10 races. I'm not sure if it was ever a playable race, but I'd like to try playing a Mind Flayer. Trolls could be fun too, but since they are complete monsters in DnD... maybe half-troll? I'm not sure.

    1. Mind Flayer is something I could probably make work, but races take a little while to write, so don't expect it super soon

  8. I would like to see some darkness/shadow options like what 4e did in heroes of shadow.

  9. I'd love more subclasses and races as everyone else has already said. I'd also love more original content, but personally I'd prefer if it could fit into the base 5e setting. I've had to fight to fit anything from the magitech update (mainly using modrons and some science work to get some of it into the world) and almost none of the western update due to the reliance on gun rules.
Maybe look into original races? And while I'm probably the only one, I always thought a Final Fantasy subclass conversion (Magitech doesn't fully count) akin to the Blue Mage subclass. (Imagine a dragoon or red Mage conversion.)

  10. Mycobids woyld ve a cool race. So would blights.

  11. I really enjoy your content overall. I'd like to see more races, subclasses, all of it. However, my main concern is that some of the subclasses that you've released share abilities (The most notable being "strange anatomy.") Perhaps you could do an update with the intent of making them more interesting/unique?

    1. I intend to revisit some of the archetypes I wasn't quite happy with in the coming months (with a new semester starting soon and all MFoV contributors being students, a change in release schedule will happen, allowing me to do this.) However, I'm not sure I'm going completely make each feature unique to each subclass. I'm a big fan of shared mechanics which use the same title as a means of making mechanics digestible, and its a philosophy that I should use more broadly (even if it does open me up to the unoriginality criticism.) Some of these, like Indiscernable Anatomy, make sense with different classes both in a mechanical and thematic way, while still possessing the important quality of brevity, so it's hard to top them.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think Indiscernible Anatomy is only used by Oozemaster now, since I removed it from a few other classes after some edits. More recently, Able Hunter is probably in greatest violation of being used multiple times, though, as I've already mentioned, I don't know if that's necessarily a bad thing.

  12. I have one little criticism, the name "Way of the Apache" is kind of... odd. I dunno, I'd have gone with something more general that doesn't necessarily imply one specific tribal ethnicity.

    1. You're almost certainly correct. Is it justifiable in that the Apache warriors are especially prevalent in old western movies? In my mind, a Wild West d&d game draws pretty heavily from Western movie genre conventions, so it makes sense to reflect that here.

Additionally, I liked the idea of tomahawk expertise, and a general native american archetype would have made little sense with that feature, since not all tribes used that type of handaxe.
