How do you make this files so identical to the book? Do you edit by yourself or there is somekind of a standart file (im planning making my own archetypes too ^^)?
ReplyDeleteWe made a template to achieve this effect using custom fonts to match the PHB and by stealing some assets, like the background, from the D&D Basic pdf.
DeleteGreat job, is it available for download?
DeleteWe're thinking we might publish the template a little later, after we've hit the number of classes we have in mind. The problem with this is, I'm not sure if I'm comfortable with publishing the font as well (since it's not free) and the template doesn't look right without it.
DeleteHum, i understand. Maybe publishing it with a similar font would be ok.
DeleteThe IM Fell English font (free on google) is very similar.
DeleteAs much as I like that font, Mrs Eaves is a small caps font.
DeleteSince it has been a year, have you considered publishing the template? :)
DeleteI'd love to see more subclasses for the barbarian.
ReplyDeleteI second this. Also Rangers, but the Barbarians overall lack the most.
DeleteThere is a reason we've been slacking with respect to rangers and barbarians. They are the two hardest classes to design stuff for, for multiple reasons.
DeleteRangers don't really get a whole lot from their archetypes. Sans archetype, they have casting, good hit dice, pretty good fighty capabilities, and some of the best utility of any class. All we can really do is mess with their casting or fighting style, unless we get a really cool flavorful idea.
As for barbarians, there's not much you can do to change them up. Barbarian is practically their archetype. And lots of things we could give them become overpowered when stacked with their rage ability.
Long story short, we're working on them, but slowly.
Moreover, by the time we finish Wild West pack, we'll have evened out the number of subclasses for each class at about 3 each. It might be a little unbalanced at the moment, but they're on their way shortly.
DeleteI have three bits of Barbarian love coming soon.
DeleteI would love to see a Witcher homebrew, these clases are always so well balanced.
ReplyDeleteI don't think any of us Vecna hand-parts have played The Witcher, but I'd definitely be willing to give it a look. Perhaps a ranger archetype...
DeleteWitch Hunter was a 3.5 paladin prestige class, though it was from Oriental Adventures, so maybe we'll write it from scratch..
DeleteIf there is still a desire for it, I have a rather fleshed out full Witcher class, based around the third game. It's got everything: signs, decoctions, potions, bombs...but it's rather complicated and probably OP. I'll still publish it, as soon as I decide to finish the alchemy list.
DeleteDearest The Palm,
DeletePlease, please, please do publish the Witcher class you have come up with. I would very much like to see how you reconciled some of the concepts with 5th Edition. I'm sure it's a lot more imaginative than the way I have done it, which is, essentially, to tell my players "go look in the Fighter section for Eldritch Knight".

DeleteIf you already have a class written up I'd love to see it! Im sure lots of others would be as well, so if you'd be so kind as to post it somewhere or send it to me i would be very grateful
DeleteI would love to see your guys take on a 5e version of the warden from 4e. I loved that thing because it felt like a true tank. Hard to hit and a huge amount of hp, with a dab of self healing, plus mid combat customizations! Sure you couldnt hit that hard, but you could take more hits than anyone! Fights often ended with my warden having the least amount removed from his hp, but because of his amount of hp and ways to negate or reduce damage, he was the one who took by far the most.
ReplyDeleteTank class, you say? The Crusader is on its way. Different mechanics than the Warden, I believe, but I think you'll enjoy it.
DeleteI was wondering how do you come up with these and make them balanced? Also are some of these sent in by fans, cause I have a custom race but not the time to play test it.
ReplyDeleteTrial, error, and expected value comparisons. If you have something you'd like to submit, send it in (plaintext or word doc, preferably) to middlefingerofvecna@gmail.com, and we'll let you know what we think.
DeleteThanks for responding, and Ill get to typing it as soon as I can.
DeleteHey guys just a thought for your next bundle pack. Why not do some low fire arm classes. things for like pirate and musketeer adventures? you could even put up some optional rules!? just a suggestion. keep up the good work.
ReplyDeleteHave you considered adapting spells from other editions into 5e? I loved how many combat phantasms there were in 3.5, like phantasmal strangler, and I was disappointed when I found out only two of them were transfered to 5e
ReplyDeleteA grouped changelog would be cool to see on the site so we can see when any pdf gets an update. These are awesome and you should keep them coming!
ReplyDeleteI like the changelog idea. It'd be nice to know when things are edited.
DeleteI'll see if I can find a way to automate it. It's a really good feature which would be nice to have, but it takes a ton of work on my part (especially on the days I'm doing 3-4 edits.) Outside of actually figuring which changes need implementing, I also need to edit the post, the PDF, and sometimes the class pack entry. A fourth step on that isn't something I look forward to adding. That being said, maybe I'll be able to find a way to auto-update a post with metadata on when we edit a post.
DeleteWhat about having a Demon Hunter sub class for Rangers? I know they had one for 3.5e (I think), how would it work in 5e?
ReplyDeleteDo you know the name of the 3.5 prestige class?
DeleteThis comment has been removed by the author.
ReplyDeleteWould love to see a true Psionic class.
ReplyDeleteThere's a number of things I've been trying not to write my own material on, in spite of the fact that I've played with them in games of 3.5, simply because it seems that Wizards will be publishing official versions of them soon.
DeleteWarforged and Psions, I'm looking at you.
I would love to see a 5e version of the arcane deck channeler.
ReplyDeleteInteresting! I actually wrote the chassis for a deck-based full class I tentatively titled the Mystic and started working on the spell cards before I started working on a much larger and ambitious full-class project. I tabled it because I has a lot of other stuff on my plate and writing an entire subsystem of cards that balance correctly in a deck was turning out to be an immense amount of work.
DeleteSo, there's two ways I can approach the class (neither of which I'll get to for at least a month, but I'd appreciate your input):
I could write an entire subsystem of spell-cards. It's no big challenge to put them in a PDF format for printing something to play with, and it allows me to tool everything to balance a random hand deck-based ability system. However, I'll be able to create a relatively few amount of cards (I mean, we might be talking 50-75 maximum over the 20 levels of play), since balancing the cards would be a huge amount of effort, and it'll also take a very long time to produce this class.
Alternatively, I could retool the class for the already existing spell D&D spell cards. This gives me a lot less flexibility in terms of design and balance, and you wouldn't be able to (legally) print them off, but if you already own the cards (which is an investment I recommend every player, new and veteran, makes) it's super easy to play. This also means I could write the class itself, the subsystem, and a few subclasses in under two weeks.
I think my players would be more interested in the second option. The player I have in mind already has a full set of the spell card so it would work out perfectly. I look forward to the result if you ever get around to it. PS: I'm absolutely in love with y'alls work keep it up!
DeleteAwesome. I'll keep that in mind when the semester is out and I pick the project back up
DeleteWould it be possible to link a way to download these individually? I carry homebrew around with me, and having like a zip file with all the things sorted into folders from the site would make it much easier when my players hear something they're interested in to whip it out on my tablet from the cloud.
ReplyDeleteI would like to maybe have a Shieldmaster 5e subclass
ReplyDeleteInteresting idea! Is there a prestige class to base that on, or should I go totally original?
DeleteWould you guys be open to outside submissions, I've got full racial workups for Aasimar, Goblins, Orcs and some standalone sub-races sitting around. If you have an email or whatever I'll forward them to you with blanket permission to use, edit and publish them.
ReplyDeleteI'd like to see if you have anything decent for the orc (we have goblins releasing in like 4 days, and we have aasimar in the Dungeon Master's Guide, if I'm not mistaken. You can email us at middlefingerofvecna@gmail.com
DeleteWhere's the Kenku on this list?
ReplyDeleteOh. I'm a couple of weeks behind on updating the links. I'll get to it as soon as I can
DeleteThanks for the reply, and a quick one at that. I don't want to seem impolite. You do great work, and everything looks and is awsome.
DeleteOk, so I've been here for a while, and I love your stuff, but I have two suggestions that you should add to your to-do list, long as it probably is. Feel free to take a look when you have the chance:
ReplyDelete1. A Conversion of the 4e Warlord, possibly the most admirable class in 4e(Which isn't saying much) basically a Battle Master dialed up to 11 on the Tactics side of things.
2. Commoner base Class. D6 Hit die melee class, as weak as can possibly be, but comes with a few tricks that makes playing it fun for those who like a challenge. This is the class you give to Rules Lawyers and so they can go nuts on gaming the system... with how pitiful this class is they'll have to eke out every ounce of power just to survive. I cite The Adequate Commoner For Pathfinder as to why this would be fun.
I guess I should look into the warlord again. Last time this was recommended, I found the stats and (having never played 4e) could not make heads or tails of it. I was completely lost.
DeleteNow the Commoner is interesting! I guess there's a couple of things I should consider before I start this (and thankfully there's a 3.5 base to go on, so I have a frame of reference):
Do I give it features other than the mandatory ones (ability score increases)?
Do I give it subclasses? If so, what types?
Has this already been done really well in 5e? I try to focus on the things which don't exist yet in the edition, or haven't been accomplished competently.
This exists: http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?378714-V1-Balanced-Commoner-Classes-for-5e
ReplyDeleteBut I feel it lacks the overall feel of a commoner, and is instead a class that players dip into in order to get crafting abilities.
The goal for this class should be that it is "almost game-breaking," as in it's a class that can ignore certain rules, like an ability that allows the class to ignore the first level of exhaustion, or do things that give the class a subtle edge over stronger classes. Feats should be very important, as they're likely going to be the strongest abilities the class gets, and should be especially potent in the hands of a clever player.
Also, they should have proficiency in the Trident(pitchfork),improvised weapons, and possibly the shovel from the shovel knight archetype.
Love the new races, look forward to more.
ReplyDeleteWhat are your thoughts on the DR'S guild thing that's available now? Are you considering monetizing some of your work?
ReplyDeleteDM's*
DeleteThat's an awesome question, and something we've had on our mind recently.
DeleteI run this blog for free - no ads, no donation bar, nothing. I seriously just love making people's games better. But the OGL gives us an opportunity to publish in an official capacity and, yes, even create commercial content. Now, I'm never taking the free content away, like ever, but it has occurred to me that we could commission an artist or two if we created some commercial content, and even do some more interesting projects.
But I still do all this writing for you guys, the readers, and ads or a paywall seems dirty. I don't want to do anything that keeps what I write from positively impacting your games. Perhaps a Patreon is the solution. Community-based? Check. Focus on free and very cheap content? Check.
Whatever we do, I think I want the freedom of going OGL, rather than using DMG, which puts half the money right into Hasbro's pocket.
What do you think? Is a Patreon a good way of expanding our little blog here, or should we just start paywalling big projects? I'll probably ask this question with a poll on Facebook and Twitter soon, because I want to know what the readers think.
I have never backed anyone using Patron, but I would certainly consider supporting you in that way. I am normally very hesitant about homebrew content but your work really adds well balanced depth an options to 5E.
DeleteI'm really glad to hear that! Check in this weekend, when I should have up some samples of what patrons are going to get at launch
DeleteI know in the PHB there are tables where you can roll height and weight for a race, have you thought about creating those for the home-brew races?
ReplyDeleteWhat are the chances of a chain based class or subclass? I'd also love to see something based off of Yang from RWBY, if any of the appendages of Vecna are interested in that series.
ReplyDeleteI am really intrigued by the idea of time / space manipulators and started to play w/ an archetype for rogue, but thought it might be interesting to see different implementations for each class (or creating a class itself). I'm about to go into a campaign that centers around time manipulation.
ReplyDeleteAlso, I might try my hand at creating a custom race for some creatures in the world I'm creating, I'll submit it here for review when I'm done.
Two words: Chronomancy Update. Coming April 1st.
DeleteCould the next bard be a composer subclass?
ReplyDeleteI can put it on the todo list for sure. Though I might take a break from bards and give some of the more neglected subclasses (I'm looking at you, cleric) a few posts before I get around to it
DeleteThis comment has been removed by the author.
ReplyDeleteDo you guys accept reader submitted homebrew? If so, do you submit by email?
ReplyDeleteYes to both (I really ought to put up a disclaimer about this somewhere.) Sending stuff in is always a collaborative process, and we can't promise to publish anything we're sent, but if you're okay with that, our email isn't hard to find.
DeleteAwesome. Yeah, I tried to find something about it but couldn't so I asked. And totally understand you can't publish everything.
DeleteAre there any plans for a Mounted Ranger archetype? Something that would be similar to the Beastmaster, but focusing on mounts as opposed to companions?
ReplyDeleteI love the Wild Hunt patron and i was wondering if a witcher class was something you guys would consider? I think i remember you guys mentioning something about it somehwere
ReplyDeleteI think we've got a rough-draft of it together, but it takes a long time to make sure that base classes are balanced and interesting to play. We'll release it as soon as we possibly can!
DeleteAwesome! Thanks for the reply!
DeleteIn fact, it is certainly complete, with signs, bombs, potions, oils, decoctions, and everything else, but it is far from a playtested, balance-guaranteed class. If you'd like to help playtest it for potential future use, shoot us an email and i can set you up.
DeleteAlright, sounds good. I actually have a player who's quite interested in playing one of these, so it'll be a prrfect chance to try it out.
DeleteCan you guys start making a master changelog, that holds when you update a class? It doesn't have to include everything done to the class, but something that tells me I need to update my stored file would be nice. Ex:
ReplyDeleteDate: 5/20/16
Files Updated: Zen Archer, Pugilist, Shovel Knight
Date: 5/22/16
Files Posted: Dragoon
Files Updated: Vanguard
God, I really want to, but I sincerely don't think it's going to happen. Right now, to post a change, I need to write the change, updated the post, update the word file, export it as a PDF, update the PDF, and update the changelog. If it's in a pack, I need to do all those steps again for that pack. And I don't ever do one update at a time; this is three or four a day when I do updates.
DeleteCopying everything into a master changelog would be an immense hassle on its own. I understand how it might be useful, but I simply can allow making one to eat up my time when I could be better spending it writing new things. If I could make it automatic, that'd be great, but I haven't figured out a way to do that.
Could you please do the Ultimate Magus (wizard-sorcerer)? Or is it too hard to implement for 5e?
ReplyDeleteIt's not so much hard as it is weird to implement in the current edition, because wizards and sorcerers are really quite similar in terms of spellcasting. If you want a wizard that just prepares all the spells he knows, like a sorcerer, there's the tattoo mage.
DeleteIf you're looking for a wizard that gets metamagic or a sorcerer which gets a spellbook, I'm afraid I don't know how that'll be received. After all, that does rob the other class of everything that makes it special. It would be similar to making a rogue with all the bard's songs and inspiration dice and spellcasting. It doesn't really feel like bards are getting a fair shake, are they?
Did you guys have a base class that mixed the armiger with the weaponsmith? I swear I remember it nut it's not here
ReplyDeleteThat'd be the Craftsman. I haven't gotten a chance to update this page in a few weeks, but I'll get to it soon.
DeleteI know this is a random request, but I'd love to see a tanky(er) barbarian subclass, maybe with +1 HP per level too?
ReplyDeleteTake the bear totem, have twice as much HP and shut up.
DeleteAhem. No hostility on our comments section. This is your one warning.
DeleteIt's okay, he has a point. I was so amazed by your homebrew I forgot about the PHB. Guess that's what happens when the only D&D source you use is Middle Finger of Vecna XD
DeleteNow that you're making desert-themed subclasses, how about one that's a reference to Dune? For example, a Kefitzat Haderech sorcerer, or a Bene Gesserit bard?
ReplyDeleteThe desert update is releasing very soon on Patreon (end of the month), so I'm afraid we won't too much time to add new subclasses to it, but it does have quite a few dune references already.
DeleteAlso, for packs that will be released through patreon, we definitely won't be making anything that is an unobscured call out to a specific source material. Dune is kind of a hard property to adapt, at least with regards to classes, except for the Benefit Gesserit: I'm not sure that Monk-Bards are a thing, but in dune they sure as heck are.
DeleteI was wonderi g if you guys at vecna were planing on doing any kind of Psionicsist class? cause i really wanna play one.
ReplyDeleteI just responded to a similar query on our patreon, and my thinking is thus: our material should work with, not against, official core material. I would rather wait and see what Wizards does with psionics, then create something that works in harmony with that, rather than fashion something in opposition to the official efforts.
DeleteI was wonderi g if you guys at vecna were planing on doing any kind of Psionicsist class? cause i really wanna play one.
ReplyDeleteWill the Waste Update be Patron exclusive?
ReplyDeleteFor the foreseeable future, it shall. It's a good one, though, so I recommend you try to get on board.
DeleteIs the Pathfinder Magus somewhere on the list? If not, would you consider doing it?
ReplyDeleteI've actually tried a draft of the Magus in the past, and the crux of the problem is making it substantially different from the eldritch knight or paladin. I'm always toying with new ideas of how to adapt the more interesting pathfinder properties, but the magus has a conceptual barrier.
DeleteAny new bard homebrews coming up soon?
ReplyDeleteNothing in the next few weeks. We're always making new stuff for all the classes, but at the moment I'm trying to pay some attention to the classes that don't get as much love around here.
DeleteMay I ask what is on the way then? :p
DeleteThe Scion of Dantalion and the Karsus patron links in the list lead to the Mimicborn.
ReplyDeleteOh, bad copy paste of the html on my part. It should link to the binder - fixed soon
DeletePhalanges of Vecna,
ReplyDeleteHave you folks considered a Blackguard build? I'm thinking about creating a Paladin archetype for it, but wanted to know if you guys were already considering it.. Thanks!
This basically exists as the Oathbreaker in the DMG.
DeleteI had completely forgot about that section in the DMG. Thanks for the reminder.
DeleteAwesome new logo, Congratulations!
ReplyDeleteWill there be more backgrounds coming soon?
ReplyDeletei have a question about the draconis fundamentum. If i choose the Elder Wyrm patron as a warlock and like to get the new nice Eldrich invocations for a warlock with a breath weapon - there is the pact of the "pact of the breath". i fail to c the advantage of taking it. i lose a pact (got the exact same breath weapon allready can not chose another) only to then be allowed to expent my eldrich invocations. should it not be more like: if your characker allready has a breathweapon (race, patron of the elderwyrm, epic boon asf) he is able to take those feats? because frankly that would be quite a bit more costly than as just taking the feat that does the same thing for me (recharge). thanks and btw: an awesome book!
ReplyDelete
